The hardest function of nailing down a face is using the right proportions. Once y'all get that role, drawing faces volition be easy peasy!

For me, the hardest role was always drawing the optics in the right size and right place. We expect at drawings or photos and it looks then easy, but then, when it's our plough, everything is 10x harder.

Similar in everything, it all comes down to practice. Start with shapes, learn the proportions.

Practise this a few times and, y'all'll run into that, soon, cartoon but the head will be as easy as tying your own shoes!

Learn how to Draw a Face by working with the right proportions! Here's a step by step guide.

Of course, I'chiliad going to help you out and requite you a pace-past-pace process on how to draw a face up. From Basic Shapes and each feature of the face up, like the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. Calculation details, immature and old faces and even drawing the face in different views!

Buckle upwardly and get your sketchbook ready. We're doing this!

What You Need To Know Nearly Drawing Faces

It'southward all nigh the shapes. Everything in a drawing is about shapes.

Yous expect at a confront as its whole. But I'll look at it and I'll try to figure out into what shapes can I put information technology downwards, so I tin can hands draw it.

Circles, squares, rectangles and guidelines, a puzzle for me to figure out.

Like I said, we're going through a step by step guide for each feature of the face.

I'g going to show you the process I apply when learning to depict new things and hopefully, it volition be most useful to you!

You can do this with any medium you'd prefer.

Either with a sketchbook along with some pencils or even pens or grab your cartoon tablet and pc. Anything volition piece of work, you simply need to come along with your motivation and start.

Bones Face Proportions

Generally speaking, we're dividing the face into three equal parts.

After cartoon our main shapes of the caput, we need to be sure that everything will be in the right places.

For this, in that location are three main spaces you might want to add:

  • one goes from the hairline to our brow
  • another from the brow to the nose
  • and finally, olfactory organ to chin

This might sound confusing, just here's an example:

Here are the basic proportions that you need to know when drawing a face!

Now, all nosotros are missing is where our optics, ears, and mouth will be.

But we'll become there in a second, so follow me and we'll build upwardly our head and face up, one step at a time!

Complete Step past Pace Guide on Cartoon Faces

If you'd similar to encounter all of this and much more than on Figure Drawing in video format, cheque out my premium course on Gumroad!

Either fashion, before we begin:

Do your hand stretches, organize your workspace, bring some water and snacks if yous wish to. The class will begin soon!

Draw The Basic Shapes

Alright, permit'due south commencement very simple.

On your page, draw a circle. If you lot detect it hard to draw a perfect circumvolve, here's a tip: draw a horizontal and vertical line, perpendicular to each other, crossing at the center.

If you prefer, apply a ruler. But I'd say to do this without it. Your lines don't need to be 100% perfect and every bit you lot practice, you lot'll run into that they'll become better with time.

At present that you lot have your lines, draw the circle effectually them.

Alternatively, you can just exercise a few circles on your folio until you lot go the hang of it. Start with smaller circles and increase their size as you get.

Start by drawing a circle when drawing a face.

Now the side by side step is to draw a foursquare within our circle.

This might sound weird, but this square will decide the width of our face up.

We're doing a pretty default face at the moment, but later on on, we'll talk about how y'all can use your shapes, to draw different faces!

Alright, one-half of our head is done, at present we demand to find our mentum.

Depict a vertical line, following the one you lot did for the circle, going down, with the aforementioned distance as the upper half of the face.

Where the line ends, that'south where our chin will be!

Draw a square inside the face to know where the jaw is.

Now, all nosotros demand is to connect the points and we have our head done. Side by side all we need to add together is our guidelines for all the features.

Pretty simple correct?

Now yous simply need to practice this shapes and, gradually, you'll get-go losing some guidelines, considering you lot don't need them anymore. Intuitively you'll already know where everything is!

Depict The Eyes and Eyebrows

It's time to start adding features to our confront.

Let's start from top to bottom.

Our quest at present is to find where our eyes and eyebrows will be. Let's take a look at what we have so far.

Now, for the eyebrows, our line is already in that location. Our brow line is where we'll draw the eyebrows.

For the eyes, in that location isn't much for us to do here either.

Go a bit beneath the eyebrows and make a new line, this is where the optics will be.

Set a line for the Eyebrows and the Eyes right below.

The Eyes

To help you on their location, nosotros can add together some guidelines here as well.

Call back that square we drew at the beginning? Let's carve up each half of the foursquare in two.

2 vertical lines, going down. These lines make up one's mind the center of each centre.

Now, all we need to do is to add our eye shapes in their places.

Either an oval and almond shape will work. See what works all-time for you lot.

Here's how you find the position of the eyes when drawing a face

Our next footstep is to fill up upwards our eyes.

Add the pupil and iris, the upper eyelid and some eyelashes if you lot wish!

Draw the eyes on the face, simple shapes!

Yous can do these as stylized as you want or go along it very unproblematic.

More cartoonish or more realistic. Endeavor out dissimilar things and experiment!

While you're learning and improving your faces, you're also developing your own fashion and discovering what and how you like to draw!

The Eyebrows

The eyebrows tin can exist very uncomplicated or full of particular.

It all comes downward to your gustatory modality and fashion. I tend to describe my eyebrows with a single line. But, if you lot prefer, y'all can draw them, pilus by hair.

Then, of course, you can get with several styles, from very tiny to very thick and bushy eyebrows.

You can draw the eyebrows very simply or with lots of details, totally up to you.

As their place, nosotros describe them right above the eyes, the line resting at that place is our guideline.

They can become a bit further than the eyes, but the starting betoken is the aforementioned.

Usually, I start from inside the face, I feel that it'due south easier to go from there.

Nosotros draw an arched line, plough it around and we close our shape where we began. Remember that the eyebrows are thicker on the inside and go thinner on the ends of it.

Here's the position of the eyebrow in the face, just above the eye.

Lovely, the face is starting to look great!

Draw The Olfactory organ

Adjacent in the list is the olfactory organ.

We already know where it ends, our 2d guideline, subsequently the forehead. But where does information technology begin?

Don't worry, nosotros don't demand to add together more lines… all the same! Our nose starts at the same line as our eyebrows.

As for its width, it will become as far equally the starting point of our eyes. Let'south do some base of operations shapes first:

Drawing the nose is easy! Here's how you can do it.

Now we but need to sketch out our nose.

At that place'south a variety of styles yous can go nearly here. I cover, in a video, the main ones y'all tin practise, so if you're interested, bank check out my Figure Cartoon course on Gumroad!

Every bit for the size of the nose, these are just guidelines, feel costless to exaggerate your noses or optics equally you wish. Especially if you're doing a more cartoonish fashion!

Sketch the nose in your face drawing.

Draw The Mouth

Nosotros're well-nigh done!

For the rima oris, nosotros don't have any guideline yet, and so permit'south starting time with that.

Find the middle signal between the nose line and the mentum. At present depict a horizontal line.

We establish our mouth!

Draw a line halfway from the nose and the chin to find the mouth!

Now above this line, we'll take our upper lip and beneath, the bottom lip.

Once again, there are several types of lips, thinner or thicker, long lips or very modest. But the default shapes are an Grand shape for the upper lip and an arch for the lesser.

Like this:

The upper lip of the mouth has an M shape, like this.

Again, effort out different styles and shapes.

Experimenting is always the best part of drawing, then have fun with it!

Describe The Ears

We've reached the last step of drawing the confront.

All we are missing now is the ears!

I admit, cartoon ears in a front view isn't the most entertaining, but information technology is also very simple.

Every bit for their location, very easy too: depict an oval shape, starting in our eyes line, its highest point rests on the brow line and everyman point on the nose line.

The ears are easy to locate when drawing the face, here's how.

And there it is, ninety% of our ear is downward. Now we just need to add some details, mostly curves here and at that place:

Feel free to try out different styles and ways to draw the features.

Well done! That'due south a good looking face up.

Calculation Details And Aging

Now that you know how to draw a complete face, we tin can add some details!

Depending on whether you're drawing a younger character or older, the face will expect dissimilar.

An crumbling face will have some wrinkles for example!

Apart from that, there are other details you tin can add to requite more personality to your character: moles, nativity signs, freckles, scars, among others.

If you're drawing male characters, there's another add-on for you: beards!

There are dozens of styles to go for: long, short, different designs, mustache only, beards only or a mix of both!

Details Can Make or Interruption Your Character

Don't overdo information technology though!

Details are overnice, but you can't easily utilize everything in one character. It can be also messy and confusing. Likewise, the betoken of adding some details is so that people will recognize your character through unique details.

If you're unsure on how to become about your characters, endeavor out different versions. Try out several things and see what y'all call up works all-time with their personality.

Once y'all've called how your character volition expect, depict them in unlike poses, locations, deportment and examination them, then y'all're certain that'due south the expect you lot desire!

Drawing One-time Faces

Equally I said before, if you want to draw someone older, you might want to add some wrinkles and even dissimilar colored spots and signs over the face.

As we historic period, our skin changes. Apply photo references if needed!

The near common wrinkles will show on the optics and around the mouth.

When drawing old faces, remember to add wrinkles and to use photo references to help you!

But, in one case over again, feel costless to exaggerate your lines! Fifty-fifty in real life, people age differently and will look different!

Drawing Young Faces

For young people, well in that location are several stages and there's a lot to play with!

Let's say you want to draw a baby or a kid. Usually, we get for really round shapes, the youngest, the chubbiest!

Play with those shapes as much as yous want.

Again, expect upward some reference images and draw from them.

Every bit for moles or freckles, those tend to appear a bit later.

The same goes for wrinkles, except, if you're going for a very chubby baby, and then y'all can add some lines on the forehead and very round cheeks.

For young faces like Babies, draw rounder faces with bigger eyes!

Children are a mix of babies and teens.

There'south less roundness to their faces, just it'southward yet there.

When drawing both babies and children, we too tend to draw very big eyes, almost also big. It makes them look cuter and children's eyes expect ever a bit bigger than when we're older and very vibrant.

Wait for this kind of details on photographs from when you were a kid, for example. Take advantage of these lilliputian features and exaggerate them in your drawings!

Equally for scars, well it's something yous can start calculation when drawing both children and teens.

If your character is the charlatan and energetic type, and so maybe a scar or other would fit. I for sure know some people where their scar'south stories begin with "When I was a kid…" and cease with "And that's how I got this one!"

Teens can be actually fun as well.

This is when the terrible acne starts to announced! You lot tin can add some pimples if you recall information technology fits your graphic symbol.

On another notation: beards! At a certain age, boys start growing facial pilus, and then you lot can start playing with this idea every bit well past giving them small stubbles or random tiny hairs.

Experimenting With Shapes

Alright, then like I said before, we drew our face in a very default mode.

Those are the proportions you lot desire to go when drawing a realistic portrait. Just if you're interested and going for a more cartoonish approach, you can get beyond these proportions!

Exaggerate the sizes of each feature and try out dissimilar face shapes. Basically, the just matter that commonly doesn't change is the position of each feature. Unless you're going for a Picasso arroyo of course!

Endeavour different shapes, a triangle for case!

Instead of a circle and square, endeavour to use a triangle. Either up or upside down. Meet the results that you get! A triangle will probably requite you a more caricature fashion and a more elongated face.

If you really want to play with a very long face, try a rectangle or a very long triangle!

What about a pentagon? Either upright or inverted.

This one tin give us very interesting face shapes.

Take the time to pracitce different head shapes. Each shape can lead to very interesting new characters!

Yous already accept your bases and now how to practise a face.

Now it's time to experiment and attempt out different formats.

Is your grapheme a very sturdy man, perhaps a boxer? And so draw a very foursquare face.

Are you cartoon someone with a very large belly? Then depict a very round confront to friction match!

There are thousands of options and you are gratis to try whatever you like!

If you don't like the result, attempt again or go with another shape. Yous learn with these experiences and not simply you lot're learning different approaches when drawing, you're also improving your drawing skills.

So, keep practicing and take fun with your characters!

Drawing Faces At Different Angles

Nosotros've done our confront in a front view, simply you might want to describe your characters in other positions. Especially if yous want to make a turn around canvass of your grapheme!

Worry not, for I will not exit you hanging!

Let's go through a few more tutorials on how to draw faces in different angles.

Side View

Our first shape here will be the aforementioned equally before. We showtime with a circle!

Again, if you wish, draw ii lines, crossing each other in the middle then connect everything together. Actually, I'd say to draw your circle similar this, considering you'll need them afterwards.

They are very important guidelines!

To draw the face from the side, we start with a circle as well.

Alright, so we have one-half of our caput done. At present, from the lesser of our vertical line, we draw an oblique line, like so:

Drawing a face to the side means the jaw will be a slanted or oblique line.

This is our mentum and jawline!

Finally, we just demand to close this shape. From the edge of our circumvolve, on the correct side, draw a vertical line until it touches the line we just did.

Connect the jaw line with the circle to draw the front of the face.

Our principal shapes are done.

Now it's time to showtime finding where each feature of the face up is!

This time, nosotros're starting from the bottom. But before that, remember how we divided the caput into three equal parts earlier? Let's do the aforementioned here!

Here are the general dimensions of the face when seen from the side

Now that's done, from the indicate where our jawline starts, let'southward draw a horizontal line.

This is where our mouth will exist! At the edge of our head.

Like final time, the upper lip should be above this line and the bottom lip, beneath.

Usually, the upper lip as well goes a scrap forrad than the bottom lip. But once again, it all depends on how y'all want your character to be!

Start sketching the jaw and mouth, pretty simply!

Next, is the olfactory organ.

We already have our line here, where the end of the nose will sit. To help you, earlier detailing and drawing a finished nose, describe a triangle, going out of the head.

This is where your nose should become.

The nose looks like a triangle when being drawn from the side.

Before drawing the eyes, allow's do the ears first.

Since we're seeing the head from but ane side, we tin only encounter ane ear. Similar before, the lowest function of the ear volition seat on the guideline we did for the nose and the highest part touches the forehead line.

This time we tin also encounter more details of the ear.

I usually go for a very simple ear, but feel costless to add all the curves that yous see on your ear!

When drawing the ears from the side, remember to add some details!

Every bit for the eyes, we can also see just 1 of them and its shape will likewise exist very different than before. Its placement is the same as before, the central horizontal line on our circumvolve!

For its shape, instead of a circle or almond shape, we draw a cone.

Now we just need to add details similar the pupil, iris, eyelashes and a bit of the upper eyelid.

The eyes have a cone shade when drawing a face from the side.

We're most washed and this concluding function is rather simple!

Nosotros but demand to add our eyebrow.

We already have a place for it and now nosotros just need to describe an arched line, a bit more tilted in the front and we're done!

The eyebrow can once again be as simple or as complex as you want.

3/iv View

This 1 is usually the 1 that most people take difficulty with. This is why I did a whole section with ten videos on my figure cartoon course, simply for drawing a complete caput in a iii/4 view!

A part of the face is subconscious, only not completely, and then getting the proportions right tin can exist hard.

Let'south start with our circle!

Then far, we've always been cartoon straight lines, this time we need a curved 1. From the height of the circle, going all the mode downward.

Drawing a Face or Head in a three quarters view can be somewhat complicated, so let me guide you step by step!

Now, to make things a bit easier, let's depict a rectangle, starting from the hairline, down to the nose.

This way nosotros accept almost a complete shape of our caput, plus two of our principal guidelines!

Draw a rectangle on the head to make it easier to find the features of the face.

Now, we need to add our chin line, so from the nose line, go downwardly the same distance as you have from the brow to the nose.

Finally, we just need to connect the dots!

Add the chin line to your three quarters view of the face.

Time to make full everything up!

Starting with the eyebrows, everything has a bit of a 3D experience right now, so it's similar we have arched guidelines. One of the eyebrows is completely seen, while the other is cut.

The shapes are the same as before though!

start working the main lines of the head and face.

Permit'due south draw the ear now, so nosotros tin discover the line for our eyes.

This time, we tin only see one ear too. Describe an oval shape, where its higher point touches the brow line and the lowest, the nose line. Just similar we skilful earlier!

Now just add the details.

The ear here is done very similarly to when we drew it on a side view.

The eyebrows and ears can be simply drawn like this.

Next is the eyes, probably the one people accept the most bug with.

Its line goes right below the brow line, same distance, and place as nosotros did before.

Like in a front view, we describe almond shapes for the eyes.

The eye that is farthest from us is unremarkably a bit subconscious from the nose, and then have that into consideration!

The eyes look a bit more slanted in a three quarters view.

Now information technology's fourth dimension to depict the olfactory organ.

We tin just encounter one of the nostrils, so the shape here will be a triangle, similar to the one we drew in a side view.

Like I mentioned before, the nose is in forepart of one of the eyes, so be certain to draw that line on top, connecting to the eyebrow.

The nose is very easy to draw in a three quarters view, a simple slanted triangle.

Finally, we draw the oral cavity, similar to the 1 in the forepart view.

An "Thousand" shape for the upper lip and an curvation for the bottom lip.

The only difference here is that one of the sides of your lips will appear smaller since a role of the face up is turned abroad from us.

The mouth can be tricky to draw, if you're having trouble, look up photo references!

Looking Upward

Every shape is mostly the same when looking up, the only difference hither is that we draw more than arched guidelines, especially for the eyes.

I'm going to leave here an example, then it'south easier to empathise!

Drawing someone looking up can be pretty fun!

Looking Downwards

Aforementioned as before, except that this time, our lines curvation in the reverse direction.

Again, let'due south see what I hateful by this with an example:

When people are looking down, the face features follow the lines!

Different Expressions, Different Face Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression you're going for, the face will have different shapes.

For example, if y'all're drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long "O" for the oral fissure, and then the face up will look more elongated.

On the other hand, if y'all're drawing someone angry, where the eyes and eyebrows grow shut together and a airtight mouth, possibly showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite event.

Depending on the expressions your character is making, the face will move accordingly!

Put yourself in front of a mirror and practice your expressions.

Take photos if yous need to! And so, yous'll have tons of references for yous to use in your drawings. If you prefer, you tin even trace on top of your photos, so yous can see conspicuously the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression you're making!

Summing It Upwards

Uff, that was a lot of learning!

But, every bit you tin can see, the important parts you lot need to retain when drawing faces are proportions and shapes.

Once yous nail those down, everything else comes easily.

Equally ever, practice a lot. In the beginning, exercise just the shapes and guidelines if needed. After a few tries, you'll see that everything will come up more intuitively.

If you prefer to see these steps in video format, bank check my course on Figure Drawing over on Gumroad. Together, we tin go over drawing a face, different types of ears, mouths, noses, etc, in different views!
